I sure wish that Matt were around to discuss it.

Sooners win about 34-20, I think.

Sounds about right to me.  oSu is probably the best team OU will face this year, but the Sooners are improving every week. 

I too wish Mateo Grande were around to speak up for the Pokes.

Some things to work on after the Bedlam game.  But I was glad to see that we owned the 4th quarter.

Iowa State looked rock-solid today.  It's a little bit worth noting that K-State was minus its starting QB.

Weren't they down to their #3?  I thought I heard that.  I honestly didn't watch much football yesterday with both the horns and ags not playing.

But I did manage to build a bunch of homemade outdoor Christmas decorations with my kids.  They loved all the woodworking, and especially the painting.

Could be they were down to their #3 QB.

I didn't watch much morning/midday football myself.  I was working on school stuff--trying to get a little bit ahead of my students in my military history course.  Not that they know more of the subject than I do--they don't.  But unless I want to start telling them, "Read pages 131 through 150--there'll be a quiz at the end of the period," I've got to have content that I can present to them.

Right now, we're in the Civil War.  Fortunately, the American Battlefield Trust has many, many good videos on Youtube for them to watch and comment upon.  In writing, that is, as we are currently "virtual."

my dad told me when he was in High School aprox 1934 they had courses on the civil war and it was a major part of American history

When I was in High School 1966 the civil war was barely mentioned

Its a shame such an iconic event in American history kinda faded away from text books

When I was in HS, the South won that war.  Somewhere between now and back then they turned it into a loss.

I guess they did a recount or something.

In the early 1980s, I had a professor at FSU on the Board in Control of Athletics who began class rivalry week, i.e. Florida/FSU with a riddle. 
Q. What do The Ohio State University and University of Florida football programs have in common?
A. Neither has won the Southeast Conference Football Conference title.
The above has since changed, but I have been using that riddle for decades since.
Q. What do The Ohio State University, and Iowa State University football programs have in common?
A. Neither has won the Big 8, or Big 12 conference football title.
Could this be the year I have to delete this from my repertoire of good humor? Step up Texas University.

It's THE watershed event in American history.
But for 100 years afterward, only southern historians and history buffs wrapped themselves around it.
Their side had both started the war that killed around 700,000 of their fellow citizens and had lost it.  There had to be some saving justification for all that.
So the war that southerners began to preserve slavery became a war to preserve states' rights, as if northerners who forced their state legislatures to pass "personal liberty" laws in defiance of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 hadn't also been standing up for states' rights.
The war for an ugly "right" to own other human beings became a noble "Lost Cause."
And that was the way that the war was interpreted for about a century.
Robert E. Lee was a saint who could have won the war had he not been undermined from within.  James Longstreet was a demon for being slow to launch his attack on Day 2 at Gettysburg.
Abraham Lincoln was a baboon.  U.S. Grant was a butcher.
Southerners were gentlemen.  Yankees were crooks.  The Union won only because of superior numbers and superior industrial production.
Southerners--united in their righteous cause--did everything they possibly could have done, but it wasn't enough.
The Gone With the Wind version of the story.
Northern historians didn't deal with the Civil War very much.  For various reasons, they focused on other areas of American history.  Frederick Jackson Turmer's "Frontier Thesis."  Alfred Thayer Mahan's The Influence of Sea Power Upon History.  Maybe they didn't want to deal with the Civil War because they would have had to deal with what followed--the failure of Reconstruction and the disenfranchisement of black American citizens.
It wasn't until the war's centennial in 1861-65 that northern historians began to weigh in in significant numbers.
The fuller version of the story isn't so much fun for southern history teachers to teach.  Many of them still sneak the good ole version into their teaching.  One of our system's 8th-grade U.S. History teachers does that.
There's another problem.  U.S. History in most school systems is divided into two years--one in middle school and one in high school.  The Civil War falls right at the break point.  Increasingly, it falls at the end of the middle-school course.  After the state exams, etc.  So it gets only cursory coverage.
It's too bad.  It should be covered more.
We used to offer an elective semester-long course on the Civil War.  It was built around Ken Burns' The Civil War miniseries.  So it was social, economic, political, and diplomatic history more than it was military history.
It would be a lot easier for me if I were teaching that rather than the built-over-last-summer "American Military History" course I am teaching.

I believe that if OU and Texas both win out, they will be in the CCG.  So you would have your wish, Hawkinole.
However, there are more better possibilities for OU if Iowa State beats Texas Saturday.
So I am torn.
I'd like to see OU get a shot at revenge/reversing scoreboard playing Iowa State.
OTOH, I'd like even more to see OU get a shot at beating Texas twice in the same year.
Of course, in neither case is a win guaranteed.

I am rereading the three volume set that was the basis for that miniseries by Shelby Foote.  The first time I read them I was surprised how good it was.  

Obviously, there is a lot of detail, I like reading about the various actors in their own words from letters and whatnot.  It also shows how many of the battles fought were very disorganized affairs with stuff happening somewhat at random at times.
