Back to the original debate, man, it's tough for me to name my FAVORITE sandwich.  I like Cuban sandwiches but only without pickle, so is it really a Cuban?  I love a good reuben, absolutely love it.  Italian Beef and Philly Cheesesteak are tasty, too.

And there was a place in Minneapolis that served the most amazing Meatball Sub I've ever had.  That was a special sandwich.
yup, my favorite sammich depends on my mood.

Italian beef, reuben, philly cheesesteak, .............

I like that you at least took a stab at a rigid definition.  I don't necessarily agree or, rather, I have some questions that need clarifying.  But it's at least a stab establishing a baseline, so well done, sir.

1) Two slices of bread, sure.  But what about the kinds of sandwiches that come on a deli roll, like a hoagie or grinder or submarine sandwich?  What about a BBQ staple, either pulled pork on a bun or chopped brisket on a bun?  These aren't burgers, even though they're on a bun.

2) So a baked turkey sandwich after Thanksgiving isn't actually a sandwich?  And a pulled pork sandwich isn't a sandwich?  No cured meat on either of those.

3) Plenty of sandwiches don't have any vegetable at all.

4) Sauce?  Hmmmm maybe so.  Are we counting oil as a sauce?

1. So it's a worthy question.  To me, a proper sandwich means the bread is a part of it.  A sub sandwich has a definite form that tells you something about the bread in the sandwich.  That's different than just putting whatever between two pieces of bread and calling it a sandwich.

2. I don't think so.  Don't get me wrong, I love putting random things on a bun.  But if I say I want a sandwich, I'm not thinking BBQ, or thanksgiving turkey.  If I'm eating a BBQ sandwich, it's because I wanted BBQ, not because I wanted a sandwich.  If I'm eating a reuben it's because I want a reuben, not because I want sauerkraut.

3. Vegan sandwiches have no meat.  I don't want them either.

4. I would say so.  It can't just be the oil you used to crisp the bread - it needs to be enough to add a bit of wetness.  Oil and vinegar is an awesome combo on a sandwich.

no sense putting filler in a good sammich

taters don't belong on a sammich or burger or hotdog

rice doesn't belong in a Willy Philly

And oh man, Mexican Bakeries and Carnicerias also tend to have this magical concoctions called a "torta" which is simply a Mexican sandwich.  One of my favorites is commonly referred to as the "Chilanga" which is a reference to its origin on the streets of Mexico City.  It's made on housemade bakery bread, not unlike a french bread roll, and it includes breaded steak, ham, Mexican chorizo, and cheese.

An authentic Mexican item that actually includes cheese?

Far out.

Slop in a pocket.

LOL I dunno - my point is when I say I want a sandwich, I don't want just whatever you can fit between two slices of bread.  If I told my wife I want a burrito and she brought me turkey, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce wrapped in a tortilla, she could technically call it a burrito but we are still getting divorced.

Not sure if this is sarcasm or not?  Lots of authentic interior Mexican dishes call for cheese.  Not the same cheeses we put on Tex-Mex, instead it's the traditional Mexican cheeses like Queso Fresco, Cotija, Asadero, Oaxaca, etc.  All depending on geography and regional preferences, as well as application (Asadero is good for melting, Queso Fresco is crumbly and good for... well... crumbling).

Anyway, I won't be having sandwiches today.  Rather I'll be grabbing some tacos from a little taqueria on the way over to my brother's house, to watch West Virginia beat the crap out of my Longhorns.  Sucking sucks.

A roast beef sandwich made with cured roast beef is a sandwich.  One made by just slicing some beef you grilled is not.  The reason I parse it this way is that when I say I'd like a sandwich, I'm talking about something you would get at a deli, not just whatever you can slap together on bread.
The only common roast beef I know of that's cured are corned beef and pastrami (although maybe I'm missing one). Most roast beef isn't cured.

I have to think the cured meat criteria is untenable.

Plus, hot dogs (often) and sausages (often) are cured, so you could unfairly include them in an attempt to restrict the criteria.

My definition for a sandwich is pretty loose.

A sausage patty between two pancakes?

Sandwich.
