Piggying off the "what is a sandwich" debate.  To be a proper sandwich, one must have:
- Two slices of bread (duh)
- cured meat (while uncured meat can be on it, it must contain cured meat)
- a crunchy vegetable (lettuce, pickle, what have you)
- a special sauce (mustard, mayo, something mayo adjacent)

Cured meat is required? So a roast beef sandwich isn't a sandwich? A grilled cheese isn't a sandwich?

I'm reminded of the waitress who asked me how I wanted my smoked salmon cooked the other day at brunch.

I was confused.

Speaking of which, a smoked salmon sandwich can be quit something.  The wife doesn't like capers, I do.

A roast beef sandwich made with cured roast beef is a sandwich.  One made by just slicing some beef you grilled is not.  The reason I parse it this way is that when I say I'd like a sandwich, I'm talking about something you would get at a deli, not just whatever you can slap together on bread.

I like that you at least took a stab at a rigid definition.  I don't necessarily agree or, rather, I have some questions that need clarifying.  But it's at least a stab establishing a baseline, so well done, sir.

1) Two slices of bread, sure.  But what about the kinds of sandwiches that come on a deli roll, like a hoagie or grinder or submarine sandwich?  What about a BBQ staple, either pulled pork on a bun or chopped brisket on a bun?  These aren't burgers, even though they're on a bun.

2) So a baked turkey sandwich after Thanksgiving isn't actually a sandwich?  And a pulled pork sandwich isn't a sandwich?  No cured meat on either of those.

3) Plenty of sandwiches don't have any vegetable at all. 

4) Sauce?  Hmmmm maybe so.  Are we counting oil as a sauce?

Smoked salmon is cured meat, so carry on.  Capers are a great crunchy veggie. Cream cheese is a perfectly acceptable special sauce.  All the ingredients have been met.

Pulled pork isn't cured, chopped beef isn't cured, BBQ or baked turkey isn't cured, and all are used to make real, actual sandwiches.

Pretty clear we're not going to agree on that criterion, but at least Max took a stab at a definition.

I'm interested in the takes on TWO pieces of bread.  Do open-face sandwiches not count?  A Kentucky hot-brown is a helluva sandwich, but only one piece of bread. And then of course the large category of sandwiches based on hoagie rolls, not slices of bread.  And then the Bun Conundrum.

Back to the original debate, man, it's tough for me to name my FAVORITE sandwich.  I like Cuban sandwiches but only without pickle, so is it really a Cuban?  I love a good reuben, absolutely love it.  Italian Beef and Philly Cheesesteak are tasty, too.

And there was a place in Minneapolis that served the most amazing Meatball Sub I've ever had.  That was a special sandwich.
