I find it interesting how Cadillac investing time and money in their Blackwing V8, and then barely used it, and now Corvette develops its own DOHC new V8 completely separately, all the while both are headed to electric down the road a bit.  I remain curious as to how fast EVs will penetrate the performance car market.

I tend to think it'll happen pretty quickly.

  • The platform itself has a lot of advantages. You can pack the COG low by building the battery pack low into the frame.
  • AWD is an easy problem to solve, and you get independent drivetrains for the front and back wheels.
  • There's also the concept of 4 independent motors, one at each wheel, that hasn't really been seen at least on a production-level vehicle, but for a performance car / supercar? Maybe there.
  • The motors have amazing torque all across the RPM band, so you don't need to keep them revved up "in the powerband" to get massive acceleration.

I'm probably missing some potential advantages there.

But yeah, I have to think that once you get people over the emotional attraction of a rumbling V8 or the symphony of a V12, the EV advantages when it comes to performance are hard to beat with ICEV.

Agreed. Some of the performance being built in that platform is already head turning.

when it becomes functionally realistic to take a 24 hour drive without major charging challenges, I will take EVs seriously.

I don't know how quickly is pretty quickly, and there are a lot of IC performance cars on the road today.

How often do folks take a performance car on a 24 hour drive?  Or even an 8 hour drive?

I think most of these are rather uncomfortable toys, the sedans aside.  Some of the sedans are pretty luxurious.

I do it fairly often.

Yeah, some do, but I think it's atypical of how sports cars are used, aside perhaps from sports sedans.

I would rarely take a Vette on a long trip, if I had one.

yup, one TV in the living-room

no TV in the bedroom

no sleeping in the recliner in the living-room

separate activities
If you don't pass out in your recliner, it's not much of a chair.

a couple of my friends that sometimes dine on large steaks and have a few drinks at the Fearless Hotel refer to the recliner as the "Death Chair"

they pass out and come to around 4am

I just get up, don't bother them and go to bed

I'm not afraid of long driving trips, but.........  I've only driven 24 hours once, and that was because of a weather situation

8 -12 hours, sure more times than I can count, but 24 hours?
