Out of curiosity, in your line of work, what is the type of work that gets done remotely? I assume a lot of people have to be on site for things. (Obviously, I assumed all of your Grand Poobah responsibilities could be handled as needed)
Yes, not everyone is able to work remote. Design teams are collaborative so it's not possible.

I don't really poohbah anymore. Handed that stuff down to the junior partners.

Mostly I do property boundary analyses these days. I markup PDF drawings for what to search for, the field crew searches and locates monuments, and then I analyze for final property boundary placement. No problem being remote.

I also do some stormwater stuff when needed.

She does a lot of drafting and client coordination, so remote is not a problem.

We put a rule in our employee handbook stating that nobody will be allowed to work remote before 3 years with the firm.

Currently, we’re allowed to work remote with whatever agreement you make with your boss. I WFH every other Friday. I’m off every other Friday ( 9-80 schedule). My boss is actually WFH every other week. Not sure the reason, but he has two young kids and a lawyer wife, so I assume they’re just juggling careers and family. I’d say a pretty decent amount of our engineering staff WFH 1-3 days per week. Almost all our meetings are online via Teams. Not unusual for 3-5 people within walking distance to be in the same online meeting, with 2-4 people at a different site in the same city and 2-3 people in India in the same call.

You know what’s worse than a meeting with people who are fully remote?  A hybrid meeting where half the people are in person, and half are remote. So much overlapping talk, poor audio, unseen cues.
Yep. This is why it's common that even if we have people in-office on a certain day, you'll have multiple people from multiple locations all taking the meeting from their desks, rather than congregating in conference rooms at each site (with some other people completely remote).

We've got some pretty kick-ass conference rooms with huge monitors and high quality sound and A/V systems.  It's still easier to do ALL remote or ALL in-person, but the technology exists to have a good hybrid experience.

But, it ain't cheap.

Eh. We've got the same, but IMHO it still doesn't solve the problems @Gigem brought up.

IMHO if you have 20 attendees and 16 of them are in the office and 4 remote, I'd take the hybrid meeting and book those 16 in a conference room. The benefits of F2F for those 16 are important, even if the 4 get a worse experience.

If you have 20 attendees, and 6 of them are in one site, 8 in another site, and 6 remote, I'd rather everyone dial in from their desks.

Not me.  At 6 or 8 in one place I'd rather have them all together in a conference room.

Personal preference I suppose, but it's also nothing new to us.  As a global multinational company we've been doing this forever.  And the technology is much better now, than it was 10 years ago.

Agreed.  Same at my office.

And the tripping over each other is a problem --- frustrating, and often awkward.

Yeah, and perhaps for me, the reason for not doing it is that the technology is much better than it was 10+ years ago... Back then it was a lot of slide decks that you could share virtually, plus audio. The technology today with video and being on camera seems far less "remote" when everyone is remote.

Or maybe it's just that I'm an introvert and misanthrope.

Pfft. I even got myself kicked out of the misanthrope club because I refused to show up for meetings.

Yeah, we’ve got the high end conference rooms with microphones that drop from the ceiling and a camera that will wander around the room and focus on whose speaking. And honestly it has gotten better with hybrid meetings.

One funny thing is that individuals almost never turn their camera on. Only supervisors and people who aspire to be supervisors turn theirs on.
