Wonder how much feed is.  I assume it's still cost effective or people wouldn't do it.  Still, I wouldn't want to save $5 dollars in eggs per week and spend $5 in feed.

Store brand eggs are $6 here. "Good" ones are $10-12.

We're not quite that bad.  Cheap ones are $3, good ones are $7-$9.  Luckily we don't have to buy them from the store very often.

I have several friends who do the same, but they don't live anywhere close to me.

I wouldn't mind doing the same, but I'd have to build a coop.  Stepson puts down 2-4 eggs a day and Mrs. DeTiger uses them quite a lot in her cooking.

One of my hen-having friends calls eggs butt-fruit.
I built a 3-level coop for a friend.  Was mobile, with wheels on one end.  It was fun to make.

Our oldest used to raise chickens. He gave up. PITA, he said.

Any photos?  You should post them in the DIY thread if so.

My little fam --- well, the female portion anyway --- has long begged for chickens, and goats.

Them: "We'll take care of them, and feed them, and collect the eggs, and play with them......."

Me:  "Uh huh. What about when it's dark outside, or raining, or 20 degrees, or you had a bad day, or you have homework, or you just took a shower, or Kelsey wants you to spend the night, OR, OR, OR ......."

Them: "We will....I promise!!!!"

Me:  "Uh huh.  Who's gonna scoop all the shit out, and keep the coop/pens clean?"

Them:  ** crickets **

Me:  "Uh huh."

We have none of the above mentioned critters..................

9 million other foods aren't doubling in price.  But you-know-who is making this one item costing more = the end of our society

Oatmeal is still cheap.  Grits.  Rice.  Mac & Cheese.  You know, food.  Calories.  But no, let's all shit ourselves with panic over 1 particular option.
very true. the depressing thing about our food isn't the cost- it's what is in the food and just how terrible most of it is for your health. I'd say 90+% of what is in grocery stores and restaurants in the US is just straight up junk.....and that might be generous.

you can spend 2 weeks in France, Spain, or Italy and never once feel bloated, or sick to your stomach, or gassy, or hungry and craving more food just a few hours later, and you don't just pack on weight. i have often lost weight on trips over there- but then come back here and put it back on immediately.

we have maybe the fattest & sickest population on planet earth. we pay the highest cost for healthcare & drugs and have worse outcomes than every other nation in the developed world. fix the food system and educate people on what they are actually putting into their bodies and you probably fix a lot of the problems with the healthcare system. that is going to be a monumental task- Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, McDonald's, Nestle, KraftHeinz, Kellanova, are all multi-billion dollar a year mega enterprises. So are the chemical companies that make the pesticides & preservatives. So are the drug companies that sell the drugs to keep the sick people alive. And they are going to fight tooth and nail to prevent any change which could affect their bottom lines.

Psh.  I don't know about y'all, but quite a number of grocery items have ballooned over the last few years.  If it's only that one item, as OAM said, I need to find where that is and move there, because our grocery budget has increased 30% from where it was in 2019, 2020ish.

On the educating people thing, it certainly can't hurt, and it's got to happen.  But I'm a pessimist due to my years in the medical industry and watching our patients at the clinic I worked for disregard everything they were told about their diets.  They just didn't care and lacked the motivation and the will power to change.  My college roommate is also a medical provider and he says the same thing.....everybody just wants the magic purple pill that will fix them and they don't want to hear anything about diet, and won't listen.  People are addicted to crap that's in a lot of our food, especially the cheaper food that low-income people can afford.  I haven't seen any data, but anecdotally, I bet the people in the worst health due to anything relating to diet are the poorest.  So I think it's also likely that in addition to motivation and will power, they may well lack the finances to change.

If it can be changed, I think we're talking about a glacial-paced, multi-generation change back to better food and improved health.  Bad diet is an entire way of life.

my doc talks to me about cholesterol and blood pressure, then just prescribes the pills
like he just knows I'm not going to change my exercise and eating habits enough to fix the problem
he's not wrong
