If you put a Spurrier or Tiller back then, or if LaVell Edwards was at a P5 program, they would have wiped the floor with most everybody.
until they ran into a 93, 94, 95, 96 or 97 Nebraska

Bu they'd have faced and decimated all or many of the Nebraska teams before that.  That's my point - offenses were still in the caveman days back then.  It's not about individual programs, but of the style of play overall.

Coach Darrell Royal labeled TCU as the "cockroaches" because they fall into stuff and mess it up.  Just as appropriate in the 2020s as it was the 90s as it was in the 60s.

Did anyone else get the 1994 or 1995 Athlon preseason mag touting TCU QB Max Knake as their preseason All-American QB?  I was starting HS then and even at that age knew how absurd it was.

I think I mentioned it on another thread.  But it was a poor prediction, lol.

well the "experts" knew Spurrier's offense would lap Osbornes' dinosaur offense in 95, but.............

Someone should have told them both offenses don't take the field at the same time.

so, it was the lack of defense by the SEC team

I could agree, since I was there

of course the Big 12 defense had ALL the answers for the fancy fun & gun Spurrier offense that night

empty backfield means they have NO ONE to pick up the blitz

poor Danny

I doubt it falls into “best ever” category but the 2007 WVU team  that went 11-2 was pretty good. Both losses came in games where Pat White got hurt and missed large stretches of the game.

The first was a 21-13 loss to USF where WVU outgained the Bulls 421-274 but had 6 turnovers.  The second was the 13-9 nightmare to Pitt when WVU blew a red carpet opportunity to play Ohio St in the BCS Championship game.

With the new playoff format WVU will never come that close to a national title again.  I’ll never get over that game.

That was one of the most unbelievable outcomes I can remember.  But that was the year of crazy outcomes.

In 98, they won their FIRST 10 games (so 20 in a row, overall) before losing that rescheduled shootout at the Orange Bowl vs Miami, then getting run over by Ron Dayne in the RB.
Here is what I remember about that RB. I was in college at the time. My roommate was big on UCLA before the Miami loss to win the NC. He thought they'd murder Wisconsin. I remember saying to him:
"If they can't stop Miami's running game, how are they going to stop Ron Dayne?"

Yeah, Eddgerin James had 199 on them.  Or maybe 299?  It was some video game number.

How many 0-2 teams were there in the early days? Those were the worst 2-loss teams.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the "hot" end-of-year 01 CU or 07 UGA teams.
There was talk of having either of them being given a chance at the NCG, due to their losses being early.  As if September losses count less or something.

01 CU beat NCG sacrificial lamb Nebraska 62-37.  But lost earlier to Fresno and blown out by Texas.  And after their bowl, the Buffs were a 3-loss team, so that's why no one's mentioned them. :57:
.
The Dawgs lost early to Carolina and blown out by Tennessee, but wound up ranked 4th nationally by bowl season, where they smashed Hawaii.  They wound up winning all their games vs ranked teams (impressive)...which means both losses were vs unranked teams (damning).  The Stafford + Moreno offense wasn't that great, actually.

Those Buffs lost three games.

Looking back on that UGA team, they might have been a little over hyped by a blend of SEC aura and draft talent. That team wasn’t THAT dominant.

Here’s a fun one, 1980 Nebraska. Second in scoring O and D against a No. 12 schedule.

Lost to a top-5 Noles team 18-14 and No. 3 Oklahoma 21-17.

Here’s a wild stat: They 91.3 plays per game, 73.9 runs. Four dudes had between 108 and 156 carries in 12 games, and another had 72.
