I think all bigtime fans know of seasons where a better team had a worse record and vice-versa.
In all of my researching of teams across eras, you'd be surprised how many teams with great records had razor-thin margins. Most often it was back in the 70s and early 80s of 'we'll try to out-tough you and you try to out-tough us' type of football strategy was the thing to do.
If you put a Spurrier or Tiller back then, or if LaVell Edwards was at a P5 program, they would have wiped the floor with most everybody. That's how Miami became Miami - going against the grain, passing to its RBs, passing more overall, along with the S to LB and LB to DE thing.
Back in 1980, most everyone was basically 2023 Iowa, but with a better running game.
