I tend to think this happens, but far more covertly than this.  Someone with deeps pockets offers to fix up the church a recruits uncle is pastor of.  Somebody's brother gets a lucrative job.  Family stuff, arm's length, etc.

Maybe there are literal "bag men" today that go directly to the recruits, it's certainly possible, but I would GUESS the coaching staff is almost never involved, directly.  Almost.

I'd guess there is serious trouble if the bagman is caught red handed

even if it's only no more contact with the program

banned from tickets, games, any activities

seems the university could sue for damages

I know they never hold coaches accountable, just fire them, but it seems reasonable

If I'm a wealthy supporter, I'm not going to personally deliver bags of cash.

I'd have go betweens obviously, maybe two levels apart from me.  And the U isn't going to want to find out it was me that hard.  I'd be donating millions a year, or whatever.

Plausible deniability.

I recall some scheme where players stayed in town over the summer and were given "jobs" at car dealerships or whatever and they didn't have to show up, ever, but got paid handsomely.  There are a lot of ways to "influence" 19 year olds.
