If we look at points scored by the Vols against decent competition, we might say the output was not awesome.

NC State - 51, definitely a good figure.
@Oklahoma - 25, it looked better at the time.
@Arkansas - 14, definitely not good at all.

Florida - 17 in regulation.
Alabama - 24.
Kentucky - 28.

@UGA - 17
@Vandy - 36

My GUESS is the put up around 17 on Ohio State on the road.

I get the impression that the upper level teams this year are all inconsistent more than usual.
This we completely agree on.

And also, I've been wrong plenty so Tennessee could also have an explosive offense that scores 40 and a defense that holds them to 10. My predictions and takes are about as inconsistent as the upper level teams this year lol

Well, when you put up 718 yards against Chattanooga, 740 against Kent St, I tend to look at the specific games stats like 313 against FLorida, 345 against Oklahoma and 332 against Arkansas as a better gauge. 313 against Georgia, but their defense looks top tier to me and maybe thats a closer comparison to the Buckeyes D. All i'm saying is sometimes season stats and rankings can be a little misleading.
I use conference stats, not total season

Vis-a-vis this discussion of stats, I like College Football Nerds.  For this game:

Scoring Offense:

  • #6 Ohio State, +49%
  • #25 Tennessee, +24%
Total Offense:
  • #8 Ohio State, +23%
  • #36 Tennessee, +12%

Scoring Defense:
  • #1 Ohio State, -59%
  • #7 Tennessee, -41%

Total Defense:
  • #1 Ohio State, -33%
  • #10 Tennessee, -20%

Here are the rankings for the two teams that beat Tennessee and the two teams that beat Ohio State:
Scoring Offense:
  • #7 Georgia, +47%
  • #8 Oregon, +43%
  • #42 Arkansas, +12%
  • #57 Michigan, +3%

Total Offense:
  • #4 Oregon, +26%
  • #12 Arkansas, +21%
  • #14 Georgia, +20%
  • #110 Michigan, -12%
Scoring Defense:
  • #9 Oregon, -34%
  • #13 Michigan, -28%
  • #19 Georgia, -23%
  • #69 Arkansas, -2%
Total Defense:
  • #8 Oregon, -21%
  • #12 Michigan, -19%
  • #18 Georgia, -14%
  • #51 Arkansas, -5%

I read that as:
  • Elite:  tOSU-D
  • Near elite:  tOSU-O, Tennessee-D
  • Good:  Tennessee-O

Both teams have shown very good and very bad performances.

How have the two done against defenses comparable to what they will face in each other:
Scoring:
  • Penn State is #5 in scoring defense:  tOSU 20
  • Alabama is #8 in scoring defense:  TN 24
  • Oregon is #9 in scoring defense:  tOSU 31
  • Indiana is #11 in scoring defense:  tOSU 38
  • Michigan is #13 in scoring defense:  tOSU 10
  • Oklahoma is #17 in scoring defense:  TN 25
  • Georgia is #19 in scoring defense:  TN 17
  • Iowa is #22 in scoring defense:  tOSU 35
  • Nebraska is #24 in scoring defense:  tOSU 21
With the glaring exception of Michigan, Ohio State has scored in the 20's or more against good defenses all year.  Tennessee has scored 17, 24, and 25 against good defenses.

Total:
  • Indiana is #3 in total defense:
  • Penn State is #4 in total defense:
  • Oklahoma is #7 in total defense:
  • Oregon is #8 in total defense:
  • Michigan is #12 in total defense:
  • Georgia is #18 in total defense:

How have the two done against offenses comparable to what they will face in each other:
Scoring:
  • Indiana is #2 in scoring offense:  vs tOSU, 15
  • Alabama is #4 in scoring offense:  vs TN, 17
  • Georgia is #7 in scoring offense:  vs TN, 31
  • Oregon is #8 in scoring offense:  vs tOSU, 32
  • Penn State is #22 in scoring offense:  vs tOSU, 13
  • Florida is #33 in scoring offense:  vs TN, 17
  • Iowa is #38 in scoring offense:  vs tOSU, 7

I think this is an accurate summation, Ohio State should win on paper.

In any season, the post season is a season unto itself.

This season- the way it unfolded - makes trying to guess this stuff even more challenging.

In this game, I have no earthly idea what to expect.   Literally- none.

I expect Ohio State to win at home by a comfortable two scores, but not to run away with the thing.

But nothing would surprise me. Truth is, this should be a good playoff game. Whether playoff games are a good idea is no longer the point (I'm against it)--it will be fun to watch.

So to sum up what you said:
OSU O - too good for Tennessee D
Tennessee O - will be mediocre against elite OSU D

hmm.. think i read that somewhere

Yep, Tennessee's defense has given up more than 20 pts in 2 of the last 13 games. (23, 31)

OSU's offense should boat race the bums.

My God.... and i thought i was a homer!

I see an almost dead even matched game, and frankly an edge to UT in one aspect.  UT hasn't "had" to run the HUNH and they pretty much haven't, all season.  Their loss to arky was straight arrogance- they really thought they could score with ease the last minute- and had nico seen sampson wide open with nobody within 15yds of him on the 15~20, they'd have not lost to arky.  They were straight beat by UGA.

UT has laid off the throttle in more games this season than I've ever seen under Heup...Okey being the most glaring... because of a young QB or a stout D, or both, doesn't matter.  UTs d line will have their way with tOSUs. UTs run game will be a handful for tOSU... tOSU will be a handful for UT- it's going to be a good game.

But that HUNH.... IF heup runs that as they did when hooker was at the helm, tOSU will be starstruck and dumbfounded.  I see that as the KEY difference between these teams.  UT is every bit as good as tOSU... the question otherwise is how UT handles the away... they don't play the same game away under heup.  That is the break for tOSU.

50/50 on this game in a neutral place- home means everything.. that HUNH may counter that (has tosu EVER played a team like that for an entire contest?)...

Yall go ahead and sleep on UT for the next two weeks if it makes ya feel better.

NO WAY OSU beats UT!

Days a freakin' headcase and can't get out of his own way. UT will have its way on both lines.
I see an easy blowout by the Vols. Buckeye fans are going home wet and sad for Christmas.

I see it being pretty even.  Should be a fun one to watch!  Will there be snow?  That would be cool.

It feels like Tennessee has only a couple of paths to win this one. They will either need to turn it into a mud fight and make a couple of plays, or maybe have that young quarterback suddenly come into his own and match his talent.

it feels like Ohio State has more paths, but I feel like their quarterback is just not excellent enough to make me feel truly comfortable.
