Every year, someone at the student newspaper writes that UW should have it, and every year, they are wrong.

I used to live in a town that was bonkers for it. I enjoy the sport in general, weirdly more than MLB.
I was in school when the decision was made. Nobody really cared.

It was done to get UW into Title IX compliance. I believe UW was the first school in the country to get there.

As noted in this thread, even B1G fans are surprised the sport of college baseball exists...

:)
man if we could just transport them to a warm Saturday afternoon at the ballpark they would become fans very fast

if for no other reason the good looking women in the stands

when you go to a college baseball game theres almost as much going on in the stands as on the field

Those are all solid programs.  Even the small schools in Texico have some very good players, and usually one ace that can beat just about anyone.  They'll ALWAYS throw that ace when playing a name program even if they have to screw up their entire rotation to do so.

That's part of the problem though.  Up in B1G country, they don't get many of those until the college season's almost over.

MSU played a 4 game series at UNLV to open, 4 game series at Abilene Christian this weekend.  Then we are in some indoor tournament in Minneapolis, followed by a tournament in South Carolina, before finally coming home in the 3rd week of March.  Considering the weather up north during the opening week of MLB, two weeks earlier will be even nastier.  Nobody wants to watch baseball with wind chills in the 20s, let alone a Big Ten caliber product.

As noted elsewhere, the issues are multiple. Team is on the road the first half of the season. You get what? Six or seven good weekends of weather for it if you're lucky? Talent heads south because of the appeal of year-round practice. Attendance numbers are unreliable at best, but as of 2019, the top conference team was Indiana at 2,001 per game, 32nd nationally.

The compensation with the college wood bat league team is good. That team sells a boat load of beer and lets you hang out and watch OK baseball. Half the joy of the sport is beer outside and letting kids run around.

Yes.

Also 13 other Big Ten schools with the same issues sponsor baseball

It's still a fun (but maddening) sport to watch on TV.  I buy the MSU BTN+ every year just to watch soccer and baseball.  MSU always has like 6-8 guys who could play at an SEC school, but were underscouted because they played HS baseball in Michigan.  But the other 75% of the roster is rough.  It's always fun to watch a tired starter who could be a fringe MLB pick get pulled for a starter that I feel like I could hold my own against.  That is seemingly how the Big Ten is decided.  Everyone has a couple minor leaguers or better on their roster, but how deep can you go until that dropoff.  UM was the first one the past couple years to really challenge that.  Their drop off was as quick as anyone, but those top guys were legit MLB prospects.  Otherwise, it wasn't decided by how good your top guys were, but how quickly you fell off behind them

Indeed, and I enjoy watching Longhorn baseball on the TV as well, when I'm not able to go to the games.  LHN has been fantastic for fans of baseball, volleyball, and other sports where most games aren't going to make it onto ESPN.

I remember in college watching every inning of a regular season UM-OSU game on ESPN on a Friday night (so like 2004?) because it was so unheard of then.

But yes, now I watch nearly every MSU game on BTN+

I might attend a February CBB game, just because I never have before. UNLV will be here on Tue, then back to back double headers vs NDSU over the weekend.
